9/19/2012 - BUCKLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- Numerous Team Buckley members gathered Sept. 17 to honor prisoners of war and those missing in action during the base's observance of National POW/MIA Recognition Day. Events included a 12-hour wreath guard detail, a multiservice POW/MIA 5K march and a retreat ceremony that concluded the day. Retired Master Sgt. James O'Neal Hughes, Fort Logan National Ceremony staff assistant, spoke at the ceremony. Hughes is a recent recipient of the Defense Department's Prisoner of War Medal, receiving the medal more than 30 years after he was held hostage in Tehran, Iran, for more than two weeks.
According to the Defense Prisoner of War/Missing Personnel Office, more than 83,000 Americans are missing from World War II, the Korean War, the Cold War, the Vietnam War and the 1991 Gulf War.
National POW/MIA Recognition Day is traditionally observed the third Friday of September.
