10/18/2012 - BUCKLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- The 460th Civil Engineer Squadron and the 566th Intelligence Squadron went head-to-head in chilly and windy weather conditions during an intramural football game Oct. 17.
The 566th IS took an early lead and showed no mercy as the team claimed a 27-6 victory and improved their record to 7-4. The 460th CES fell to 2-6 with the loss.
CES received the opening kickoff but only converted one first down before forced to go four-and-out. The first points of the game came after 566 IS's marched 47 yards down the field. Quarterback Jack Owen threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Michael Garcia; Owen's first of four touchdowns for the game.
Making an attempt to get points on the board before halftime, CES quarter back Carlos Gomez threw a ball up near the end zone hoping one of his receivers would come down with it. The pass was intercepted, and 566 IS called a timeout with 49 seconds left in the half.
They added to their lead, Owen connected with John Rader on a 44-yard touchdown pass to go up 14-0 at halftime.
"No picks to be honest," said Owen, about what led to his team's success. "I've been throwing picks a lot lately. Everyone was running routes beautifully and the line was doing a good job."
Owen completed 11 of 17 passes for 213 yards and ran for another 34 yards on the ground.
566 IS started the second half strong, completing a 45-yard pass setting up a first-and-goal inside the 15-yard line. They would end up getting pushed back and forced into a fourth-and-long but converted on a 19-yard touchdown pass.
The CES defense stepped up, sacking Owen and forcing 566 IS to turn the ball over on downs. Soon after the CES's offense got involved. Gomez connected with Jayce Yeager on a 46-yard touchdown pass to finally put points on the board. Gomez went eight for 19 with 121 passing yards.
CES'S momentum didn't last long, as their secondary let a 65-yard touchdown pass, sealing the deal for 566 IS.
Yeager said his team needs to improve on protecting the quarterback, because it was hard to hit a lot of deep passes.
He also said the wind played a factor, but "in an outdoor football league, you have to adapt and overcome."
