10/23/2012 - BUCKLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- As Halloween approaches, children will soon be filling the streets going door to door giggling the famous phrase "trick or treat."

To help ensure Halloween stay's safe and fun base officials offer some tips.

"It's inevitable that at some point your children will want to go out by themselves. Before you allow them to do this you should have a talk with them about strangers approaching them and what they should do," said Stephen McMillan, 460th Space Wing Safety office ground safety manager. "You want to make sure they are going out with friends and you want to know who those friends are. I would also have them list the route they will be taking. Set a curfew on what time they need to be back and make sure that they have flashlights and reflective material in their costumes if they will be crossing streets. With smaller children you always want to accompany them out to trick or treat."

Remind children not to eat any candy until an adult has inspected it. Here are some safety tips:

       · Walk, don't run
       · Bring a flashlight
       · Use sidewalks facing traffic and avoid streets
       · Stick with a group and never go alone
       · Wear some type of reflective gear
       · Only go to well-lit homes and never enter a strangers home

If looking for other options rather than taking children door-to-door, check with local schools, communities and malls for controlled trick or treating. A lot of areas have special events during Halloween time and will hand out candy and other goodies. Events are usually held indoors to eliminate hazards associated with weather and traffic, according to McMillan.

Buckley Family Housing is an option of a safe place to take children trick or treating. Children will be able to trick or treat in base housing from 5 - 8 p.m. Oct. 31, according to Carla Lucero, BFH leasing agent.
